Llyndir Hall hotel, nestled away in the village of Rossett, Wrexham is a popular hotel for leisure and business guests, plus it's one of Wrexham's premier wedding venues. But what about the food - and is it worth visiting to receive 20% off the food bill with your This Is Wrexham card?
To answer this, we sent our blogger Jennifer and her husband along for a meal and to assess if the restaurant is a destination in itself...
From the inviting driveway, to the colourful lights and the sheep statues in the garden, the first impressions of Llyndir Hall were positive. Being a hotel, we were greeted at reception and shown to the restaurant. I’d been able to make a booking online (which I always prefer) and we were able to choose a table of our preference as it was a fairly quiet midweek evening. We were offered drinks (we just opted for a jug of water, with it being a school night) and were given a menu to browse by our friendly waiter. The menu was extensive and included something to suit all tastes and appetites... from light bites and superfood salads to more substantial burgers and steaks.
I was feeling pretty hungry, so I opted for a prawn cocktail as my starter, which came with brown bread and butter. My husband chose the smoked trout fillet with potato salad. The restaurant began to get busier and it was apparent that a lot of the guests were residents at the hotel. Nevertheless, the service was prompt, attentive and friendly throughout our visit.
My prawn cocktail arrived looking fab in a little Kilner jar with triangles of buttered bread on a wooden board. The proportion of prawns to salad to Marie Rose sauce was just right and I devoured the lot!
"...the service was prompt, attentive and friendly throughout our visit".
My husband’s smoked trout was also delicious (I managed to grab a small mouthful before he ate it all) and it went perfectly with the creamy potato salad upon which it sat.
For our main courses, I (eventually) decided on lamb hot pot with a side order of red cabbage and my health-conscious husband chose a half roast chicken (and swapped the regular fries for sweet potato fries without any problem). Our food arrived promptly again and looked very appetising... we tucked straight in. My hot pot was full of soft, tender lamb and chunky carrots, with sliced potatoes on top and a couple of baby carrots to garnish. It was tasty, hot and filling. The red cabbage had a hint of lovely sweetness and was a great accompaniment to the lamb.
"...my husband said it was probably the best chicken he’s ever had!"
As for the roast chicken, my husband said it was probably the best chicken he’s ever had! It was cooked to perfection, with a lemon and garlic crispy skin and meat that was moist and tender. It came with a small dish of garlic butter and a larger dish of sweet potato fries.
For dessert we managed to resist the sticky toffee pudding and delicious-sounding crumble and we shared a small plate of mini-desserts.
We had a chunk of bread and butter pudding, a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a square of syrup sponge cake. The waiter warned us that they were bite-sized but we just wanted a small taste, so for that, they were just the right size. Small but perfectly formed... the sponge was soft, moist and sweet, and the bread & butter pudding had a hint of vanilla and caramelised sugar that was dangerously morish (good job we had a small piece!) The decaf cappuccinos at the end were smooth and creamy with the hotel logo in chocolate for a luxurious touch.
All in all, it was a pleasant, tasty and reasonably priced meal in a comfortable environment. The staff were attentive but not obtrusive and we left feeling very satisfied... although it would have been nice to just walk upstairs a fall into a comfortable hotel bed!!
