10 Things to do along the UNESCO Pontcysyllte Aqueduct & Canal World Heritage Site

The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct might be closed for maintenance until 14th March, but there’s plenty of other things to keep you busy along the 11 mile stretch when you visit.
1. Have one foot in England and one foot in Wales as you cross the border, taking in the views from Chirk Aqueduct, with the majestic viaduct running alongside you. The views under the arches towards the Ceiriog Valley are breath-taking!
2. Visit Chirk Castle, an amazing Marcher fortress now in the hands of the National Trust. As well as touring the castle, the gardens and grounds are great for exploring.
3. Chirk itself has a lovely high street of shops and eateries, as well as the beautiful St Mary’s Church.
4. There are 2 tunnels along this stretch of the Llangollen canal, between Chirk and Froncysyllte. Grab a torch and brave the walk!
5. Ty Mawr is a lovely country park with a circular river walk, animals to visit, a park and coffee barn. Plus it enjoys gorgeous views across Dee Valley, with the Cefn Viaduct running majestically past.
6. Walk to Llangollen from Trevor Basin, a beautiful stretch of canal. If you walk as far as Llangollen Wahrf, you can enjoy a well-earned cream tea or ice cream!
7. Llangollen Wharf offer Horse Drawn boat trips on selected days off season, and daily as the season progresses. What a relaxing way to soak up the atmosphere.
8. Walk as far as the Horseshoe Falls to take in another engineering marvel! You’ll also see the historic Chainbridge too at this end of the 11 mile site.
9. Head into Llangollen to take a walk along the riverside and enjoy some delicious food and drink in this truly picturesque town. There’s so many independent shops and eateries to experience too.
10. Finally, take a trip on the Llangollen Railway, a Heritage Railway which follows the River Dee 10 miles up the Valley to Corwen. With scenic stations and walks to enjoy along the way, it’s the perfect unique experience.
